Over the years we have had some people who are so keen about our usual 2-hour Christian Heritage Tour that they want more! This has now developed into a 4-hour tour, which we call the Extended Christian Heritage Tour. The first part covers the same material as the Christian Heritage Tour, but after lunch we continue with a visit to the Covenanters’ Prison. Next we explore the National Museum, which houses many of the most important Christian artefacts in Scotland, such as Alexander Peden’s mask, the National Covenant, early Celtic Christian crosses, and the Chi- Rho silverware dated at about AD 410. Our route continues with the statue of David Hume, the sceptical philosopher who stirred Europe and America with his ideas. We then proceed to St Giles’, John Knox’s grave, and as far down as John Knox’s House.
This street is filled with Christian history. Discover the Christian influence on the Enlightenment and the reaction to it. Explore where the Covenanters were imprisoned and executed for their faith, and where Samuel Rutherford’s Lex Rex was burnt; this book had a huge influence in shaping Britain, Europe and America. We find out about John Napier, who invented the logarithm and James Braidwood who pioneered the modern municipal fire service. See where Billy Graham preached in 1948, and where the revivalist George Whitefield shook the city. All along the Royal Mile we unearth treasure as stories are told of key Christian reformers, Covenanters, preachers, scientists, and others.
Guests will need to be reasonably fit and healthy, as the tour covers a mile (with breaks), and afterwards there will be the walk uphill, back to where we started.
